Small Gestures to Show You Care

Sure, you feed your dog and rub him behind the ears when you get home from work. But when is the last time you took your dog to the park and let him run around? When did you last engage your dog with a nice bath and brush down?

The fact is, pets have feelings, just like we do. And just like us, any form of affection you show sticks in your dog’s mind; and stays there. It could be a nod from you, a pat behind the ears, or a thorough rubdown every now and again, but these gestures go a long way.  The more gestures you give, the more loved your dog will feel.

Let Your Dog Run Free (At Least Occasionally)

Your dog comes from a long line of canines who ran free in the wild, and those genes never actually went away. Your dog has inherited, just like every other dog today, the urges to run and roam free. The problem is that most neighborhoods don’t take kindly to free- roaming dogs.

If you live in a community where your dog is required to remain indoors all day long, your dog will most certainly be affected. All it takes is three-to-five minutes to throw a ball from one end of the room to the other so your dog can fetch. Get a length of rope and tug-of-war with your dog till you’re both ready to fall over. A minute here, a few minutes there, all of these times add up. Playtime is love time, and your dog will surely enjoy every minute he gets to spend with you.

Regular Vet Visits

Your dog needs regular check-ups just like we do. Your FBF also requires vaccines to keep infections and diseases at bay. A healthy pet is a happy pet, always remember that. Losing loved ones is a part of life and, unfortunately, there isn't much we can do about it. That doesn’t stop us from hurting. It doesn’t prevent us from missing them and thinking about the things they did to make us laugh, cry; or when they helped us through toughest of situations. And then there are those times when your pet merely kept you company and made you feel truly special.

So what do you do? How do you move on? Will you ever get over it?  What will you say to the kids? Will they understand? Is the house going to be the same without “Skipper” or “Daisy” or “Hulk” taking up room on the couch?

It’s Okay to Cry

The truth is, you can move on. It’s not always easy, but you can do it if you know what to do. It’s okay to sit around and mope for a few days or even weeks; however long it takes you to come to terms with your loss.

Adopting is an Option, but Be Wary

If you want get over the loss of a pet quickly, you could save another from a pet shelter. The bond you share with your new best friend may fill the void, but it will never fill the void completely. At least you’ll have the love of a new furry animal to keep you company at night, when you might feel the most grief. 

However, make sure you consider adopting very carefully and don’t move too fast. It might not be healthy because you might tend to expect from that pet what you expected from your previous pet. This may result in you comparing the two, which may cause you even more grief and undo amounts of stress. 

Take It One Day At A Time

Like every tough situation in life, take it slow. Time heals. Think about some people that you may have lost in the past and how painful it right after, but then consider that it’s much easier to talk about it now. Time heals all wounds. Feeling hurt right now is normal, but it will pass soon. 

Console yourself and your kids with all the fun times you had with your pet. Remember with fondness your little buddy’s personality and know that your FBF wouldn’t want you grieving. As a final note, there is nothing wrong with needing to talk to someone about the loss of your pet. If you need to see a Therapist and talk about how you feel, do it. Do anything it takes to help you cope with the loss of your pet. Just know that things will get better.

As a pet owner, you have a responsibility to ensure that your best friend remains happy and healthy well into old age. That’s why we always recommend regular pet grooming. After all, a well-groomed pet is a happy and healthy one. But there’s another reason that regular grooming just makes sense. Your groomer will be spending quality time with your furry best friend, massaging, bathing, scissoring and clipping, and we can often catch things that you might miss. What can we catch? Signs of cancer, of course. No one likes to think about their pets getting cancer, but it never hurts to pay close attention for the signs. Here are the top ten warning signs of cancer in pets that we always look for, and you should also for the longevity and life-quality of your beloved animal friend.

1. Blood or Discharge: Blood or discharge doesn’t automatically mean cancer, but something like that shouldn’t be ignored.
   
2. A Change in Urine or Defecation: If your pet is uncharacteristically messing in the house or there seems to be loose stool or blood in the urine, the same thing applies. Make an appointment with your vet right away.
   
3. Sores That Take a While to Heal: Most sores should heal up by the two week mark. If your pet’s sores remain open or festering, your pet should be checked out as soon as possible.
   
4. Not-So-Pleasant Smells: A pet groom should take care of any smells your pet may be emitting, but even the groomer can’t do anything about an internal illness. Ask your vet about any foul odors you just can’t put your finger on.
   
5. Chewing or Swallowing Problems: If your pet can’t eat very well, it could indicate a sore tooth or something more serious. Ask your vet about your pet’s suddenly abnormal eating habits.
   
6. Lack of Energy: If your usually rambunctious pet is suddenly lethargic, it could be cancer, but that’s not all it could be. It could be that your pet is just worn out. Ask your vet for answers.
   
7. No Appetite: If your pet isn’t eating at all, again, it could be cancer or it could merely indicate a troublesome stomach.
   
8. Sudden Weight Loss: If your pet is losing pounds quickly, don’t ignore the issue. Schedule an appointment with your vet right away.
   
9. Swelling or Lumps: Abnormal swelling or lumps are usually caught by your pet groomer, a person who is massaging, bathing and pampering your pet during the typical spaw day. Ask your pet groomer if he or she notices anything about your pet should know about.
   
10. Stiffness/Lameness: If your pet is limping, dragging a leg or seems unable to walk or stand correctly, something serious could be going on.
